FISH NAMES - TAMIL-ENGLISH

The Tamil name of a fish can differe state to state. You'll find here the tamil name of a handfull of fishes found in pondicherry territories.

        I'm glad you've found this page so fast, but it's not so soon neither. You kept yourself busy with friends, chatting, browsing, roaming, camping and have been ignoring what you're really supposed to know. This is the time ! It's now or never!

Sometimes, it comes to all of us to wonder about the names of the fishes we're having for lunch, most probably we just know the name of the dishes and ignor the name of the fishes. In the left column, you've been given a tab named "FISH NAMES (Tamil-English)" in the menu. You'll find the names (in Tamil and English), of more than fifty varieties of fishes that we can find in the local market (some of them are not in the market, they are not to be eaten).

     We have passed days, making this research, it doesn't seem to be over. The names and translation given in "FISH NAMES (Tamil-English)", are simple you just have to memorize them. But when it comes to "Jacks, Trevally, Scads and Mackerels" you need a great attention and you'll be needing a guide and experience, because To each one, of these four species, belong at least three species (three type of fishes). The problem comes here : In Tamil all these four Big families belong to a unique "Mega-Family" called "Paarai" (in tamil).

PAARAI :

        A) JACKS :     

  1. Blue Runner   [other names : Blue Strip Jack, Hard tail Jack, Coranx Crysos). Can grow upto 27in]
  2. Crevalle Jack  [other names : JackFish, Coranx Caninus (pacific) or Coranx Hippos (atlantic). Can grow upto 40in]
  3. YellowTail Amberjack [other names : California yellowtail, Seriola Calandi. Can grow upto 8FT]

        B) SCADS :

  1. Big Eye Scad
  2. Hard Tail Scad
  3. Rounded Scad
  4. Selar Scad

        C) TREVALLY :

  1. False / White Trevally
  2. Largenose Trevally
  3. Threadfin Trevally
  4. Yellow Strip Trevally
  5. Bluefin Trevally
  6. Giant Trevally
  7. Black Trevally
  8. Malabar Trevally
  9. Cleftbelly Trevally 

        D) MACKERELS :

  1. Horse Mackerel (remember, horse mackerel (belongs to "Paarai") is different than Indian Mackerel (doesn't belong to "Paarai")]

The above mentioned 17 species belong to the Big Family Of Paarai. We'll post for you, the pictures of these fishes, but you'll have to visit again later to get their names in tamil. Kindly be noticed that these species look all alike. The size and the water they live, make them change names and family they belong to.
